Professional identity of management accountants: leadership in changing environments Logo cima

Dr Jai Kim, Professor Caroline Hatcher & Profe... |   Free |   CIMA |   2012 |   Thought leadership

This research also takes an innovative approach to explore the meaning of identity and leadership for MAs as a professional group with capacity to support and influence others to achieve effective outcomes for their organisations. Overall, the research identifies the need for a significant extension of the current image of MAs and the possible trajectory towards the development of an appropriate and powerful professional identity for future MAs. By taking their place as effective leaders who value innovative and holistic thinking and who are people-oriented and communicative, individual MAs will internalise the core meaning of the profession of the future and project a positive image and reputation leading to career success. After reading and reflecting on my profession and how I answer when I am being questioned on my profession and qualification, I feel that I have represented the CIMA qualification well. The profession encourages truthfulness, professionalism, up to date knowledge, ethics, and follow certain principles and rules.

Very interesting summary of the current perceptions of MAs and the expectations for the future. Interested in particular about integrating MAs more fully into business units and becoming a more engaged team player.

The article reflects the development of the Financial management function in my organisation which is moving from a technical/policing role to a full business partner role.
It also shows the career development cycle with the enduring element in the start of you career and the emerging as you develop your technical knowledge, personal development and  become a people facing communicator

This was an interesting article which identified the 3 main types of accountants, Current Accountants, Management Accountants and Future Management Accountants. Within my organisation I can relate to all 3 of these types each responsible for different elements and linked with level of experience and historical learning's. I can closely relate to the Future Management Accountants with the qualities and roles of my current work. Within the organisation i can see a change in focus from the top down on the importance of the FMAs to drive the organisation forward and help with business decisions with the back up of finances. It was interesting to see the views of other CIMA members of there reputation within the industry and i can concur with the findings, however would suggest there is an improving reputation for Management Accountants in industrys not directly accounting practices.

I have a much better understanding of how the future role of the Management Accountant is likely to develop. It seems like the balance of roles is changing and so called soft skills are becoming as important in the role as the more traditional skills. This has led me to consider how I can better develop my skill set to meet the changing role and challenge my thinking on my future development.
