No matter what their divorce decree says, noncustodial parents need a signed release, called Form 8332, Release/Revocation of Release of Claim to Exemption for Child by Custodial Parent, to be able to claim their children as dependents and take other tax credits. This article looks at how this requirement can trip up taxpayers and IRS guidance on this issue.
