Excellent article with obvious points raised that should be at the forefront of our minds when dealing with underperformers. From experience most teams have underperformers and this article highlights that the usual 'go to' method of dealing with these employees is less effective than some of the techniques and approaches highlighted.  Using a different approach, developing on what  was outlined in the article has helped not only getting more and better quality work from a particular underperformer it has helped team morale as, unknowingly, this was adding pressure to the rest of the team creating resentment and a general downturn in output across the board.  Using the points in the article and developing the approach over the past year has seen the individual's productivity and quality improve whilst driving others in the team to get back to their best producing quality and quantity with team harmony restored.

Need to invest more time in developing and mentoring people, check they can do the job rather than .assume they know how to do it.

put in place a monitoring system which is shared so that targets are set as well as improving employee understanding of their role in the strategic direction of the business

An interesting article that highlights positive action that can be taken to tackle underperformance drag.

The article gives useful pointers on 6 areas that can be focused on in order to turn the difficult situation of under performance from a team member into a positive outcome. Also highlighted are the pitfalls that managers fall into in not dealing with under performance either in a timely manner or by not taking any action.

A useful starting point for understanding how to tackle under performance and trying to get the most out of each team member. Understanding these underperformance issues should help to improve team performance and add to a department managers skill set.
