This insightful article demonstrates the benefits of big data to businesses and the competencies that they need to get the most from it - one of which is to have the right people. This has highlighted to me as an accuntant that I must widen my scope to

1) engage more with the business managers to more fully understand the commercial environment and so build my business acumen and

2) increase my awareness of the statistical methodology used in data analytics.

This will allow me to be a "go-to" person for data analytics within my function with a foot in both the "figures world" (data scientist) & the "real world" (business manager).

The "Management accountants’ pathway to big data" graphic clearly shows me the steps I must take to reach this goal. The "Big Data Jargon Buster" in the graphic is a great help.

It is very important for management accountants to harness the power of big data. The article made it clear that as accountants we need to understand our businesses. Many analytical models use statisticsand thus accountants need to use them to understand their businesses.

This article has motivated me to develop an interest in building links with those who already use analytical tools like IT staff and others. It also helped me to be curious and thus find answers for the key questions in business. By doing this I will develop a deeper understanding of the business processes. i will also be in a best position to help others with key information for decision making.

I have resolved to put more emphasis on statistics especially on financial reports I prepare on a monthly basis. I have also resolved that I need to display my in-depth knowledge of the business model in monthly meetings I have with management. Instead of dreading the meetings I am going to look forward to each and every meeting as it is an opportunity to show that I understand the business processes. This will definately makes me the the "go to" person for data analytics.

I also believe that if the finance team is full of people who can analyze data well, then the department will be well equiped to deal with any information request from other departments and management. I am therefore looking forward to list this as a training need for the team.

The article has directly addressed one of the areasthat I was lacking.
