Joint ventures and strategic alliances offer the benefits of M&A – access to necessary resources – without the irrevocable commitment and timeconsuming integration inherent to M&A. Collaboration and trust are key to getting the most out of these new relationships, and both collaboration and trust (through better communications) are facilitated by internet enabled tools. These tools also enable the creation of specific new organisational forms, such as industry consortia and virtual organisations. (PDF 114KB)

This is a high level "teaser" to the benefits of JVs and other collaborations. It present the benefits of JVs versus acquisitions effectively but does not discuss the disadvantages.

JVs can be very important in developing a businesses strategy but a thorough analysis of the risks and downsides must be conducted before entering into such relationships, especially if the JV is in a foreign jurisdiction.

Joint ventures are worth considering rather than the M& A approach which requires significantly more commitment and risk.

A large number of M& A deals fail to deliver and reduce overall value.

I can see the benefits of this, although I didn't know the article related specifically to M & A.  It can be applied anywhere in my business.

Interesting article which gives some views in M&A world. For sure internet facilities or Data bank can be a very important tool for preparing M&S strategies. I do believe half war is won if the preparation is good and this is where internet can play a very big role.

Few statistics in this article did trigger and enlightened me on M&A successes and failures.

In my market there are a number of loose associations. Individual companies that group together into a buying association where they can achieve a better deal than they would as individuals.
